Ethnomedical Uses: Sete-sangrias is traditionally used in Brazil as hypotensive to treat high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, as a diuretic, antipyretic (to preventing or alleviating fever) anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, muscles or joints pains, antiulcer, antisyphilis, wound healer, rashes (externally is used in the dermatitis caused by poison ivy, psoriasis and eczema) and laxative.

Properties/Actions Documented by Research: The hypotensive activity was confirmed in previous studies from CEME-MS (Brazilian National Medicine Center) and CNPq (Brazilian National Council of Scientific and Technological Development) showing the decrease in blood pressure. The results also indicates the presence in the plant of antinociceptive (reducing sensitivity to painful stimulation) properties with actions apparently mediated by non-opioid mechanisms, which helps to reverse neuromuscular blockades and relaxes the nervous system.

Cautions: It has as a mild hypotensive effect (lowers blood pressure). This plant shall not be used in pregnancy or children.

How to use/ Preparation: Infusion: pour a cup of boiling water onto l teaspoonful of the herb and leave to infuse for 10-15 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day. Tincture: take 1-2ml of the tincture three times a day.
